Mrs. Trinkle’s Recommended Reading Lists
Grades K-1
All titles available at Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com all the time.
- Anything (and everything) by author Mo Willems! He wrote the pigeon books and the Elephant & Piggie books.
- The Mercy Watson books by Kate DeCamillo! The vocabulary is terrific!
Grades 2-3
- Magic Tree House! I have never met a reader who didn’t start out with series books and this is the best! You want your 2nd grade student to get into these and read them all through the 3rd grade! These books help kids learn history and geography: WOW!
- The A to Z Mysteries are a great series for these grades. They help kids make predictions and ask questions, which are two essential reading skills.
Grade 4
- The absolute best books to give 4th grade students are all by Kate DeCamillo: The Tiger Rising, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, and The Tale of Despereaux which are the best books for children!
?? What about Diary of a Wimpy Kid? Like Junie B. books, these may make you cringe. Adults won’t like them, but your child will read them and read them fast, and that is a good thing! These books help kids get through a chapter book more quickly, which is an essential reading skill. The newest Wimpy Kid, #3, is hot off the presses! And there is a journal for aspiring writers.
