Phonics

Definition

Phonics/Alphabetic Principle teaches children to use the relationships between sound (phonemes) and letters that make up the sound (graphemes).

Research Indicates

1. Phonics/Alphabetic Principle instruction should be focused and systematic. Consonant and vowel letter-sound relationships should be taught in a prescribed sequence for early readers. Phonics may also be effectively reinforced for early readers during the teaching of spelling, writing, and reading.

2. For transitional and fluent readers, Phonics/Alphabetic Principle instruction is a means to an end and should be applied during spelling, writing, and reading. For transitional and fluent readers, Phonics/Alphabetic Principle is not a subject in and of itself.

Strategies
